Shush! Don’t you know you can’t speak about this topic? You are not supposed to talk about such issues. It is considered bad.” There are many times we all have been given a shut up call because we wanted to discuss a topic that is considered taboo in our society. This world is finding new planets to live on, but Pakistani’s are still not ready to talk about following topics:
- Mental illness:
“Depression and anxiety? No no, these are not illnesses, it’s just in your head. Don’t be ungrateful.” You will get to hear a similar line whenever you will try to speak up about your mental health. It is high time we talk about our mental conditions. One shouldn’t be labelled “crazy” directly if he says he can’t sleep at night. Let’s help each other out and listen to them. Depression do exists people.
No matter how sad or abusive a married life is, one cannot think of ending it ever in our society. A failed marriage is the biggest thing to be ashamed of. A divorcee will just turn into a bad person with no character only because he/she weren’t compatible with their partner. Yes, a marriage needs a lot of patience and time to grow, but if it is not turning working out for two people, we should make their struggle easy for them instead of pushing them to live in a poisonous relationship.
Let it be a matter between couple, or in case of sexual violence. You just cannot utter this three lettered word. We gave tried to hush this topic so much that if someone ever talks about it, it straight goes down the category of vulgarity. Everyone should know what the right and wrong is regarding sex. Moreover, if someone is a victim of sexual harassment, they shouldn’t be sked to keep quiet. We need to show who really the bad guy is.
- Domestic violence:
We live in a society where women do not have a say in any matter. So basically she can’t even say anything when her own husband comes homes and makes her life miserable. He can slap her, hit her with a bat or burn her, nope she can’t say anything. Because if she does, her IZZAT will be damaged. Why do our IZZAT lie in hiding the bad? All the woman out there, you need to start speaking for yourself.
Every time a woman goes to buy sanitary napkins, she has to face a shocked shopkeeper who will rush and put them in a thousand layers of shopping bags, because is someone sees that surely their eyes will be burned! We all need to grasp the concept that menstruation is a part of woman’s life. It is a mechanism made by Allah just like our respiratory system. Why do we need to hide it?
- Child marriages:
Child marriages still happen. Yes, even in the 21stcentury. It doesn’t happen much in the big cities, but as we move across to the tribal areas, it is a reality. It is so wrong on so many levels. A child childhood shouldn’t be taken away from him/her. A person who isn’t capable of being responsible enough for themselves, how can they be tied in such a meaningful and deep relationship? Our Jirga system needs to realize that they need to stop ruining childhoods like that.
The list of taboo topics still doesn’t end. I can go on writing about a dozen more topics we should be vocal about, however these are the biggest issues that need to be addressed in order to move forward and develop as a society. Let all of us keep an open mind and hear people out before labelling them names and shutting them up.
