We must be the familiar with the Bollywood movie, “ Chak De India!”. A team of girl misfits, playing hockey, making the nation proud. The usual feel good movie. But there was one iconic scene in the movie where the girls team go head to head with the boys hockey team, in the end the boys hockey team realizing their opponent’s passion. But although the movie broke records, no such significance came in through this concept. But not quite so as it seems, meet Raheela Zarmeen, The manager of Pakistan’s female football team has just tucked away a nice goal by being appointed the first South Asian woman to coach a men’s football team. Coaching Karachi Electric’s men’s team, she also is the brand ambassador for the world renowned Leisure League. Along with her two sisters, Raheela grew up playing football in a remote town in Balochistan. This diamond in the rough didn’t let the odds against her end her dreams, and well now has her name embedded in history. She stated that her parents urged her to try sports as a profession but often imitated David Beckham through her playing style (Gerrard was still better though). After hearing her struggle and the obstacles she faced weren’t just the defenders but the society too, a pretty big burden to carry through your career building stage, hence with her prolific goal scoring abilities she didn’t just tuck the ball away in the net, society’s doubts were shot away too! We really do hope that these heroes continue to change our trends just like Raheela, and for her future. May the goal be with you!
