The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has introduced a project to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the city.
The plan includes converting certain markets into pedestrian zones, expanding parking facilities and providing cycle and motorbike lanes along key routes, particularly from Katchery Chowk to Murree Road and Faizabad.
The project, which is currently awaiting final approval from the Rawalpindi Commissioner, also includes relocating the livestock market (Mawaishi Mandi) and transport terminal (Laari Adda) along GT Road.
In addition, the RDA plans to remove encroachments around Katchery Chowk to improve traffic flow. The RDA, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation will remove encroachments along the pathway (including footpaths) from Katchery Chowk to Murree Road. A separate lane for bicycles and motorcycles is also planned on Murree Road.
RDA Director Kinza Murtaza said the increasing number of cars and motorbikes plying the narrow streets of the market contributes greatly to traffic congestion and air pollution. To address the issue, the RDA will designate congested commercial areas as pedestrian zones and expand parking spaces in open spaces to accommodate vehicles.
